Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) encompass fundamental tasks essential for self-care and daily functioning:

  • Personal hygiene involves practices like bathing/showering, grooming, nail care, and oral care to maintain cleanliness and health.
  • Dressing entails making appropriate clothing choices and physically dressing and undressing oneself.
  • Eating refers to the ability to feed oneself, even if not capable of preparing food.
  • Maintaining continence involves using restroom facilities independently, including getting on and off the toilet and self-cleaning.
  • Transferring/Mobility encompasses standing from a sitting position, getting in and out of bed, and walking independently from one place to another.

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs)

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) pertain to more complex tasks necessary for independent living:

  • Basic communication skills involve using various forms of communication such phones, email, or the internet.
  • Transportation encompasses driving, arranging rides, or using public transportation to move around.
  • Meal preparation includes planning, cooking, cleaning up, and safely using kitchen equipment.
  • Shopping involves making appropriate food and clothing purchase decisions.
  • Housework encompasses laundry, dishwashing, dusting, vacuuming, and maintaining a clean living space.
  • Managing medications cutails taking them correctly, managing refills, and avoiding conflicts.

Financial Literacy

Financial Literacy entails comprehending financial concepts and mastering skills like budgeting, investing, borrowing, taxation, and personal financial management. In collaboration with UnCommon Cents, we offer a six-week course to our clients, covering various topics such as money-saving strategies, understanding social security, credit, and debt management, setting financial goals, navigating college expenses, purchasing a car, insurance essentials, and housing considerations.

Job Readiness

Job Readiness encompasses preparing young individuals to secure and maintain employment, fostering confidence, self-reliance, and financial responsibility. Through partnerships with local businesses in the Dayton area, we provide internships and job opportunities to gain experience and explore diverse career paths. Our support includes assistance with resume building, job search strategies, interview preparation, and financial planning and budgeting skills.

Diversity training

Diversity training is an educational initiative aimed at fostering positive interactions among different groups, mitigating prejudice and discrimination, and equipping individuals with the skills to effectively engage and collaborate with those who are different from them. We provide support to children from diverse faith backgrounds by encouraging them to delve deeper into their own spirituality. Throughout the year, we facilitate learning about various faiths and perspectives through exploration via food, music, attire, traditions, celebrations, and diversity-focused education. This approach enables our children to cultivate a vital aspect of their being.

Extracurriculars (Electives)

Extracurriculars (Electives) Our extracurricular program offers character-building and culturally enriching activities designed to promote personal growth and development. These encompass a diverse range of options, including cooking, sewing, gardening and landscaping, as well as arts and culture.

Community engagement and Social responsibility

Community engagement and Social responsibility are integral parts of our approach to nurturing children to become agents of positive change in their communities. Through meaningful volunteer opportunities, our children gain valuable insights about themselves and the world. Activities include visiting nursing homes, assisting at food banks, assembling care packages for the homeless and those in need, and writing letters and cards to patients in nursing homes and hospitals. These experiences not only benefit others but also foster empathy, compassion, and a sense of social awareness in our young people.
